How to Water New Sod in the Inland Northwest
A simple week-by-week watering schedule for new sod in Spokane and North Idaho's dry climate.

The single biggest factor in whether new sod takes is water — especially here, where dry air and sandy or clay soils pull moisture away fast. The goal is simple: keep the roots damp while they grow down into the soil, then taper off so the lawn learns to reach for water on its own.
Week 1 — keep it wet
Water within 30 minutes of the last piece going down, soaking it thoroughly. After that, water two to three times a day, enough to keep the sod and the soil beneath it consistently moist — not flooded.
Lift a corner on day two or three. The soil underneath should be dark and damp an inch down. If it's dry, you're not watering enough.
In our summer heat, midday is when sod dries fastest, so a short midday watering matters more here than it would on the coast.
Week 2 — pull back
As roots start to grab (give a corner a gentle tug — resistance is a good sign), drop to about once a day, watering a little longer each time. You're training the roots to chase moisture deeper.
Week 3 and beyond — deep and infrequent
Shift to two or three deeper waterings a week. Deep, less-frequent watering builds a stronger, drought-tougher root system than daily sprinkles. Early morning is best — less evaporation, and the blades dry before evening, which keeps disease down in our dry climate.
Mowing and traffic
- Stay off the new lawn for about two weeks while roots knit in.
- First mow once it's rooted and 3 to 3.5 inches tall. Keep the mower blade sharp and never cut more than a third of the height.
- Keep pets and play off it until after that first mow.
A few local notes
Spokane and North Idaho water restrictions can affect your schedule in peak summer — check your city's rules before a summer install. And if your yard runs to heavy clay, ease off if water starts pooling; clay holds moisture longer than sandy soil.
